Admission Requirements

OCS-South is committed to offering parents an alternative public school choice. As such, we aim to help parents make an informed decision about whether OCS-South is an appropriate option for their children and whether their family can support the school and its policies. OCS-South uses non-discriminatory processes and actively recruits a diverse student population from the communities it serves, who are committed to the School's educational philosophy and instructional practices. Our diversity goal remains to achieve a racial and ethnic balance among our student population that is reflective of the general population of the neighboring community in which OCS-South is located, and OCS-South strives to become more closely aligned to the demographics of the Pasadena Unified School District student body. As such, OCS-South’s enrollment, application and preferences are a direct response to maintain a diverse applicant pool and ultimately study body.

Additionally, OCS-South will adhere to the provisions of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and ensure the child of a homeless individual and each homeless youth has equal access to the same free, appropriate public education as provided to other children and youths. The school’s admission policy follows our goal of ensuring the school attracts, retains, and graduates a diverse student body.

Admission

The School will be nonsectarian in its programs, admission policies, and all other operations, and will not charge tuition or discriminate against any student based upon any of the characteristics listed in Education Code Section 220.

The School shall admit all pupils who wish to attend the School. No test or assessment shall be administered to students prior to acceptance and enrollment into the School. The School will comply with all laws establishing minimum and maximum age for public school attendance in charter schools. Admission, except in the case of a public random drawing, shall not be determined by the place of residence of the pupil or his or her parent or legal guardian within the state.

Admission to OCS-South will be open to any resident of the State of California. Transitional kindergarten students must have their fifth birthday between September 2 and December 2 of the year for which admission is sought 1Kindergarten students must be at least five years old on or before September 1 of the year for which admission is sought. OCS-South will enroll all students who wish to attend (Education Code Section 47605 (d)(2)(A)), subject to capacity. If the number of students applying for admission exceeds capacity, admission shall be determined by public random drawing in accordance with Education Code §47605(d)(2) and any applicable federal requirements.

Application Process

As a first step in the Application Process, all prospective families are strongly encouraged to attend an Enrollment Tour at the desired campus and to return the completed Application Form by the established open enrollment deadline .2 OCS-South's Enrollment Tours are publicly announced through our website, postcard mailings, flyers in our local businesses and community outreach events. Our Enrollment Tours for the following school year begin September 1st and continue through March 1st. OCS-South offers day tours, evening tours and weekend tours. The application process requires submission of a student application form that collects basic information (e.g. name, date of birth, grade level applying for, and eligibility for admissions preference) and contact information on the student/family (e.g. parent/guardian name and contact information) to be used after the lottery. Materials may be submitted in person to the Main Office at each of campus, via email, or by the online electronic form.  As part of the application process, families will indicate a preference for Campus 1 or Campus 2 or no preference on campus location.

Admissions Preferences

The next step in the Application Process is the lottery, which is held, if necessary, at the close of the open enrollment period, and serves to determine admission to OCS-South. The lottery will be held by grade level. Existing students of the School who submit a timely Intent to Continue Enrollment Form will be guaranteed enrollment for the following year at their current campus. Admissions preferences will be offered in the following order:

Children of current OCS-South employees who apply for the campus where the employee works

Siblings of currently enrolled OCS-South students who apply for the same campus their sibling attends

Students who are eligible to receive free or reduced price lunch

Students who are currently enrolled in or reside in the attendance area of a public elementary school where an OCS-South campus is located

All other students

Public Random Drawing

If the number of students applying for admission exceeds the capacity of the school, admission to OCS-South will be determined by a public random drawing (“lottery”). The lottery is a public event which will be held each spring for enrollment in the fall term of the given year; the lottery will be held on a campus of Odyssey Charter School and will be conducted by the Director of Operations.

The lottery, executed by grade level, will determine enrollment for the fall, and it will establish a waiting list, in the order in which applications are drawn, once all the openings are filled. If new openings occur during the school year, children will be enrolled, in order, from the waiting list. It is the responsibility of the families on the waiting list to inform the School of any changes in contact information. Families will be given 3 business days to respond to a phone call regarding an opening. If there is no response within 3 business days, the student will forfeit his or her place on the waiting list, and the School will contact the next person on the waiting list. Once the waiting list is exhausted, if spaces remain, enrollment for the remainder of the school year will be available after completion of the Application Process.

All admitted students will receive an Enrollment Form, which includes a list of required documents. At this time, families will be required to submit verification documentation for all preferences indicated on their application. The Enrollment Form must be returned to the School by the specified date or the child(ren) will forfeit enrollment for that school year. All required documents must be received by the established deadline(s) or the student will no longer be enrolled for the school year and the School will enroll the next student(s) on the waiting list.

Unless the School office has been notified in advance, students who are not in attendance by noon on the first day of school will forfeit their enrollment and the next student on the waiting list will be notified.

Transportation

Given that enrollment in OCS-South is a “parent choice,” transportation to and from school will be the sole responsibility of the parent and will not be provided by OCS-South, except in specific cases where transportation may be otherwise mandated by law.

[1]  In the event transition kindergarten is not funded in future years in the same amount or manner by the State as it currently is funded, OCS-South reserves the right to discontinue operation of TK.
